Council Minutes June 15, 2000 Present: Mark Ace, Phyllis Thompson, Jean Richardson, Patti Loverink, Jeff Harris, Jon Harvey, Jeff Jansen, Kate Evans Region 7 Conference Status: Facilities: Patti is researching facilities. The downtown Portland Hilton can accomodate our group of ~500 (hotels and conference facilities). They've offered a very competetive room rate of ~$130/night (single or double occupancy). Hospitality: Diane Purser has volunteered to serve as hospitality manager and is looking for volunteers to help her plan events, greet people, and assemble packets, etc. Please contact her at purser@teleport.com or call 503.533.8006. Registrar: Jodie Gilmore (jgilmore@pacifier.com) of Washougal, WA has volunteered to be our registrar. She's done this previously for a smaller event. She'll work with John Fysh to find the right database. She'll also talk with the Hawaii conference registrar to find out what they used and see about getting a copy as a starting point. Managers SIG Report: Building and Using Linux Beowulf Clusters. This lecture discusses the design and use of a Linux Beowulf cluster, including how to determine if a Beowulf cluster is the right approach, and various configurations (e.g. COW, NOW, rackmount). Other issues for discussion include computatinal demands, memory and bandwidth, communications, security, configuration management, power and remote services. The treasurer's report was distributed. We currently have about $2100 in checking and $1000 in the Money Market acount--$3100 total. We seem to lose about $500-$700 every program meeting. Chapter-wide mailing seem to cost about $200-400. Payment from National comes in mid-October. We discussed whether or not to continue hosting program meetings at the Greenwood, given the amount of money that we lose there. We decided to poll our membership about what to charge, when and where to meet and what to serve at our meetings. Jon Harvey will check out the possibility of meeting at PCC's Central Workforce Training Center near OMSI. We also spoke about finding corporate sponsor(s) for meetings (Mark mentioned MedicaLogic.) Jeff Harris is handling the questionnaire. The evening ended with applause for Msrk's excellent leadership as our president this year. Two Updates: Membership update (memo from Mark 6/16)--According to Julie, the Membership Manager, the current member count is 400. There are 72 members without e-mail addresses. We are going to have to contact these members again over the summer and try to capture their e-mail addresses if they have them. Finances Question (memo from Mark 6/20)--Ellen Fenwick, Region 7 Director-Sponsor, indicated we don't have to wait until Oct. for our rebate from National. All we have to do is fill out the financial report showing the chapter's balance on June 30th. Mark will work with Jeff on this.
