Admin Council Minutes April 25, 2002 Present: Patti Loverink, Ken and Vicki Miller, Jeff Jansen, Candis Condo, Jean Richardson, Dave Grassmann, Debbie Layton, Rachel Houghton, Kymm Nelsen, Margaret Jennings, Kate Evans * Jon Harvey, our longtime Hospitality Manager, is moving to Boston. We'll miss him and his many contributions to the chapter. * Rachel and Jean have been working on program topics and speakers for next year. We'll start with Richard Lederer in September. He has a spot on NPR and several books; he also received a Toastmasters Golden Gavel award. Lederer would be a good speaker to highlight our campaign to reach out to our sister organizations. Other possible topics are progression meetings on project management and interpersonal communication for technical communicators. We also will be beefing up STC-U with more than two workshops per year. Rachel will send out a list of program topics and dates to the council. * Rachel also announced that we have eight paid registrants for Margaret Jennings' Instructional Design workshop May 18th. * Concerning the National STC Conference in Nashville, Rachel reported that Maralee Nelson-Sauter, Kymm Nelsen, Robin Schuckmann, Rachel Houghton, and Darinda LaFlash will be attending. We have completed all the items in the Merit and Excellence sections and will receive a Chapter of Excellence award; however, we will not know until the Board of Directors votes in Nashville whether we will receive a Chapter of Distinction. We're in competition with other chapters in our size category-300-600. Mark will also be receiving his Associate Fellow award. * Patti updated us on WVCSTC's potential involvement with CASE (Creating Avenues of Success and Equity for Women and Minorities in Advanced Technology) at PCC. Patti asked for clarification from Ellen Fenwick, our Director Sponsor, who then consulted our president Bill Stolgitis. He commented as follows: A money contribution (unless it went to the PCC Foundation) and an endorsement are not appropriate, however, " if they're merely asking for volunteers (e.g. finding chapter members to speak at CASE events) or asking the chapter to share training opportunities (e.g. inviting CASE students to monthly programs or workshops) that'll be great. Simply go ahead." * Patti reported the Job Searchers' Support Group discussion is on hold. Hilary Almers is looking for similar, existing groups. * We heard from Phyllis Thompson that our Chapter Bylaws have been approved. * Patti reported that the Rose City Student Chapter has been officially approved and is listed on the national Web site. * SIG Reports: Valerie Allison needs a Co-Manager for the Online SIG. Joel Dippold of the Online SIG reported by e-mail that they had decent attendance at last month's demo of two synchronous training tools. Next month Jean Richardson will be presenting "Delivering Documentation 100% Online". The next Entry Level SIG meeting will be in October. * Jeff Jansen indicated we have $4,643.10 in the bank. This doesn't reflect the expenses from the last program meeting or the approximatly $10,000 in income from the conference. * Patti announced we have a new logo. * Kymm updated us on our End of the Year event Thursday, June 20th. The number will be limited due to space and the price will be about $20-25 per person. Entertainment will be provided by Comedy Sportz, an improv group. * Kymm also mentioned her discovery that classes she's spoken to at Clark and WSU-Vancouver are not aware of our chapter. We need to make an outreach effort there. Margaret Jennings, our new Chancellor of Education, also talked about setting up a Speaker's Bureau, and Candis Condo volunteered to help. * We spent a long time wordsmithing our chapter mission statement, starting from two sample statements provided by Dave Grassmann. After much discussion, Dave and Jean Richardson volunteered to continue working on the statement. We'll be revisiting this at the next Council meeting. * The meeting concluded with Patti announcing Dave Grassmann is our Volunteer of the Month in grateful appreciation for all his work for our Strategic Planning meeting. Our next meeting will be Thursday, May 23rd. 30
