Admin Council Minutes April 24, 2003 Present: Kymm Nelsen, Rachel Houghton, Russell Pike, Kathee Kuvinka, Teresa Shelton, Cindy Reid, Jean Richardson, Patti Loverink, Darinda LaFlash, Vicki Miller, Debbie Layton, Margaret Jennings, Larry LaBeck, Kate Evans * The March minutes were approved. * Vicki reported we have $8,274.31 with $6,268.31 in money market, $706 in checking, and $300 in Pay Pal. * Teresa Shelton is our Volunteer of the Month in recognition of her extra work for the Midvalley events in Salem. * Debriefing April events. Tom White's program meeting was very positively received. His presentation will be put up on the Web site. Margaret Jennings mentioned that the Internet Professionals (IPN) has Webcast/ audio streaming. We discussed whether to consider this or not. Should we charge? Should it be free to members? Would it cut into attendance at our program meetings? Those who attended the Midvalley events discussed their reactions. * Rachel Houghton talked about the End of the Year event. Rachel and Debbie Layton are going to have our chapter archive ready for this event rather than the May meeting in Dallas. This will be a 3-panel display on corkboard with a time line of our 28 year history across the bottom. One focus will be the evolution of our chapter logo (we've had 3 in the last 5 years). We discussed some possible venues for the event: Pittock Mansion, the Jenkins Estate, Kennedy School, and the Forestry Center. * Tom White has agreed to be our Zoomerang Czar. * Debbie was applauded for all her work on the chapter directory CD, and Rachel indicated she's almost ready to send off the materials for the Chapter Achievement Award. * We had a long discussion about the state of the chapter Web site. Valerie will be unable to continue as Web master or Online SIG manager. Darinda has been covering for Valerie, and reports that we need a manager to oversee an overhaul of the site. We have link rot and inconsistencies; plus, we are not standards compliant. We have two interns who are willing to help with the redesign. Darinda has spoken to Dan Zeisz of Midvalley about their Web site. The problem is to redesign the site, yet keep it current at the same time. We need a Web Manager before we bring the two interns in; we also need a sponsor from the Admin Council. Darinda will prepare an announcement that we are considering a redesign. * Jean Richardson spoke about her regional outreach efforts, the multi-chapter meeting which Jean attended in California, representing 6 chapters, 200 members, with 50 chapter leaders. Andrea Ames was the keynote speaker. Jean indicated that there was a lot of interest in the retooling workshop we had a year and a half ago. She feels as though our chapter is ahead of the Bay Area in responding to the recession and the needs of our members. We've had a much more volatile job market than the more stable Bay Area. We talked about how offshore writing is affecting our jobs. Jean and Andrea will be working together at the national level on these issues. And Jean Richardson and Margaret Jennings will work together to discuss how our chapter might work with the Northern California chapters. * Cindy Reid reported there are over 35 articles in the upcoming Careers and Education newsletter. The next issue in July will discuss writing specific documents, and September's issue will concern regional issues. Cindy has created a style guide for the Galley. * Our membership figures are down. In April 2002 we had 425 members; March 31, 2003 we had 362 members. * Our next meeting will be May 29th; we adjourned at ~8:25. 30
