Call for Judges: WVC 2007-2008 Competitions
Are you looking for a way to get more involved in our chapter?
Do you want to beef up your résumé with more community service?
Do you wonder what types of technical communication your colleagues
develop (and how your own measures up)? Are you interested in innovations
in technical communication?
If you answered “yes” to any of these questions,
please consider serving as a volunteer judge in one of the following
Willamette Valley Chapter 2007-2008 competitions:
In addition to building up the community/professional
service section of your résumé, serving as a judge
exposes you to a variety of ideas and examples that may influence
your own work. As a judge, you will see first-hand the wide variety
of media through which we communicate and the many industries that
employ our skills and talents. Serving as a judge also allows you
to be part of an international effort to encourage quality in and
set standards for our profession.
The success of the WVC competitions depends upon
the participation of our volunteer judges. Please consider putting
your technical communication experience to work by serving as a
judge this year.
When will my services be needed?
Judging for the 2007-2008 WVC competitions will
occur between approximately October 20 and November 20, 2007.
Who can serve as a judge?
All technical communicators are eligible to serve
as competition judges. Judging experience is not necessary. If you
are new to judging, we will team you with more experienced judges.
Can I serve as a judge if I am entered in a competition?
Yes! Entries are judged on their own merits, rather
than compared to one another, so there is no conflict of interest.
We will not assign you to judge your own work.
How are judging assignments made?
The information on your Judge Information Form
(see below) allows us to assign you to the competition you are most
qualified to judge, create judging teams with a balance of new and
experienced judges, and ensure that you are not assigned entries
that would result in a conflict of interest.
How are entries judged?
A panel of three judges evaluates each entry against
criteria established by STC for the competition and category to
which the entry was submitted. Every entry meeting the standards
for an award level will receive the appropriate award. Entrants
will receive a copy of each judge's evaluation of their submissions.
How do I sign up?
To sign up as a judge, submit a completed Judge
Information Form (JIF) to the Competition Manager by Friday,
October 5, 2007. Instructions are provided on the JIF,
which can be downloaded using the link below. (If you do not have
access to Microsoft Word, please e-mail wvccomp@comcast.net
to request a form in an alternate format.)

the entries to be judged, will be held on Saturday, October 20,
2007. Alternate arrangements can be made if you cannot attend this
meeting, but attendance is strongly encouraged.
