STC 48th Annual ConferenceA narrative summary and photographs of the STC 48th Annual Conference in Chicago may be found at www.stc.org/conferences.html or by going to the STC Web site and clicking on the 48th Annual Conference logo. Here's a photo of (starting at the back going left) incoming STC President Judy Glick-Smith, Region 7 Director-Sponsor Ellen Fenwick, Willamette Galley Newsletter Manager Robin Schuckmann, Willamette Valley 2nd Vice President Rachel Houghton, and Mid-Valley 1st Vice President Kim Bixby.
Eight or nine members of the Willamette Valley Chapter were able to attend the National Conference this year. There were workshops and sessions available on all aspects of the technical communications field: editing, marketing, communications, contracting, online development, lone writing, managing, and more. This year was the first time I attended the National Conference, and I thought is was well worth the investment. I networked with several people from around the country and around the world at the Welcoming Reception and the Regional Reception. I was able to purchase difficult-to-find books at the STC Bookstore. I attended a variety of sessions that fit my specialty: editing and layout design. The Vendor Showcase featured several companies, even some from the Portland area! The Networking Luncheons were a great way to meet people in my specific profession as well as people that just wanted to exchange networking ideas. Overall, I made some great contacts and learned about great additional resources that will help me in my business. For those of you that want to plan for next year, the 2002 National Conference will be held in Nashville, Tenn., May 5-8, 2002. Robin Schuckmann is owner of Print Media Solutions offering desktop publishing and technical editing services-creating clear, concise, and consistent marketing materials.
