June End of Year MeetingOn June 21, the private dining room and patio at Il Fornaio restaurant was full of STC members and guests who gathered to celebrate the end of the year and welcome the incoming STC Willamette Valley Chapter Officers. Chapter volunteers were also honored for their hard work throughout the year. Congratulations to our 2001-2002 officers:
We also heard a special presentation called "A Lighthearted Look at Our Profession" by STC International Immediate Past President Mark Hanigan. With over 20 years experience in the techcom field he shared humorous stories about his adventures in the technical communication industry. The floppy disks, manual typewriters, and beta machines of yesterday are almost buried and gone. But what about the full-fledged technical communication departments in the corporate environments with editors, writers, illustrators, and designers? Are they on their way out too? In the early years, the technical communication industry was mainly men with an unknowledgeable audience. In the Golden 1980s, women became a huge part of the technical communication professional arena, and the audience became stronger technically. Through the 1990s, there was upsizing, downsizing, and rightsizing. We also saw a redefinition of a global economy.
