President's MessageOn Thursday, June 20, the chapter recognized the volunteers that make our organization run so smoothly. When adding up all the elected officers, SIG managers, committee managers, and volunteers, the total number comes to 56. Fifty-six people gave their time and effort to help our chapter succeed in the past 12 months. You can see a list of these names here. Some of the gifts given included STC mugs, gift cards for Starbucks or Hollywood Video, magnetic poetry, and STC logo t-shirts. Volunteers are the lifeblood of any professional organization like ours. Volunteer opportunities are always available in the chapter. We have a new volunteer coordinator, Mairi-Kate Campbell, who is ready to “matchmake” people, their skills, and the available opportunities. If you have always wanted to help out, but didn’t know how, contact Mairi-Kate at volunteer@stcwvc.org. She will request information about your skills, your hobbies, your available time slots, and contact phone number, and e-mail address. Some new faces will be on the Administrative Council this year. Maralee Sautter joins us as 1st Vice President, after being the first president of the Rose City Student Chapter. Kathee Kuvinka, our Membership & Mailing Lists manager, joins us as 2nd Vice President. Len Humbird and Russell Pike, members of the inaugural Senior Member Advisory Panel, join us as Secretary and Treasurer, respectively. In September, we welcome the STC’s Board of Directors. They will be meeting at the Westin Portland on Friday, September 12, and Saturday, September 13. We are having our September program meeting on Thursday, September 11, and Andrea Ames, current 1st Vice President of the STC, will be a featured speaker on the agenda that evening. Please mark those three days on your calendar — there will be lots of information about the upcoming events coming your way during the summer. Watch for announcements of events being held during the summer. JoAnn Hackos is holding a workshop on Structured Writing for Single Sourcing on July 23 – 24 in Portland. For more information, go to the following URL: http://www.usabledesign.com/01seminars/01swss.htm. The Region 7 Conference deadline for early registration ($250) is June 30. See http://www.region7conference.com for more information on the program sessions being offered. This year, the conference is being held in Calgary, Alberta, Canada on October 2 – 4. Kymm Nelsen, our immediate past president of the chapter, left a wonderful legacy for me to continue. She contributed so much in the last year, and I am proud to have her as one of the voices of experience on the Administrative Council this coming year. Thank you, Kymm, for all your help in transitioning the reins of leadership into my hands. I promise I will treat that trust with respect. Thank you, Rachel Houghton
