Volunteer Positions Available

by Jim Slaight

"Volunteering demonstrates professional initiative," says Phyllis Thompson, Documentation Manager at Merant and current STC WVC Chapter President. "In growing your career, you can use STC volunteering activities as another avenue for developing skills you can use in your current position, or as you move closer to a position you'd like to see yourself in at some point in your future."

Right now, volunteers are needed in the following positions:

Mentoring Program Co-manager: One of our chapters' more unique programs, the mentoring program carefully matches senior STC members with newer members. As a mentoring program co-manager you help recruit and train mentors for their roles as advisors and career counselors. You also review protègè applications and select those newer members who will participate in the program. Managing the mentoring programs requires 8-10 hours per month.

Award Competition Recognitions Manager/Committee Members: This person or group determines the awards presented to each winner (trophies or plaques), produces award certificates, and purchases gifts for judges and volunteers.

2001 Regional Conference Catering Coordinator: The Catering Coordinator arranges box lunches, network lunches, breakfasts, banquets, and all food related aspects of the conference. This position requires 2-4 hours per month from now until June, then 6-12 hours per month until the conference in October.

Lone Writers SIG Manager: It is NOT lonely at the top. The leader of the STC Willamette Valley Lone Writers SIG will be surrounded by courageous lone writers from throughout the local technical writing market. We're asking you to donate approximately five hours per month to develop a topic, submit meeting announcements for Web and mailing lists, track RSVPs, find speakers, confirm meeting locations, and prepare meeting reports.

2001 Regional Conference Speakers' Assistant: The Speakers Assistant is responsible for each speaker's needs during their workshops and seminars. Responsibilities include testing A/V materials to insure they are working prior to each event as well as providing drinking water and writing materials at each podium. He or she may also be asked to help each speaker keep in touch with their other normal business by passing along phone messages or handling administrative tasks. This position requires 2-4 hours per month from now until April, then 6-12 hours per month until the conference in October.

Regional Conference Hospitality Team: Hospitality team members answer attendee questions, help with event registrations, and generally keep everyone moving in the right direction. Requires 2-3 hours per month from now until May, then 4-8 hours per month until the conference in October.

Manager's SIG Manager: The technical communications Managers' SIG needs a new manager. Erling Neilsen has done a great job running this SIG for nearly a year. Time to pass the baton to our next very capable managers' SIG manager. This position requires approximately three hours of your time a month. You'll need to develop and publicize timely topics for each monthly meeting. You'll also need to reserve meeting space and manage reservations. This is a small, informal group so the meetings pick up a lot of momentum on their own. We already have a list of topics that the group is interested in discussing at future meetings.

Indexing SIG Manager: This new SIG needs an expert indexer to establish a creative agenda of informative topics on this growing area of technical communications. We're asking you to donate approximately five hours per month to develop a topic, submit meeting announcements for Web and mailing lists, track RSVPs, find speakers, confirm meeting locations, and prepare meeting reports.

Awards Competition Co-manager: Our current Awards Competition managers have handled this popular and respected event for two consecutive years. We are seeking someone interested in working with these knowledgeable veterans as we move closer to this year's event. This is a first step toward c-managing the 2002 event. This position requires 8-10 hours per month from October to March.

Membership Directory Coordinator: Your STC Willamette Valley Chapter is seeking a multitalented communicator who can coordinate the production of an updated chapter directory. This volunteer will update membership information, add a list of sponsors, sell several ads, oversee layout, negotiate printing, and coordinate mailing of the finished directory. The target completion date for the entire project is February 2001. Time commitment is estimated at 10 hours per month in both January and February.
